Supreme Court extends stay on acquittal of GN Saibaba | India News


NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday extended its interim order staying the discharge of G N Saibaba and four others, who were convicted by a trial court under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for their alleged links with banned Maoist groups, till it commences final hearing on Maharashtra’s appeal against the discharge on January 17.
Saibaba, through senior advocate R Basant, sought and granted 10 days’ time to file response to the Maharashtra government’s appeal against the Bombay HC’s discharge order, counsel Nithya Ramakrishnan on behalf of other four accused opted not to file reply to the appeal and said she would base her arguments on trial court and HC judgments and evidence in the case. A bench of Justices M R Shah and Hima Kohli acceded to solicitor general Tushar Mehta’s request for filing a compendium of evidence and witness deposition statements within a week.
